Students INFO

  1. 1.Students must be 16 years of age to enroll.

  2. 2.Classes are not welding certification classes.

  3. 3.Each 10 week session is $400. There will be no refunds once classes have begun.

  4. 4.Classes are limited to 8 students with a minimum enrollment of 3.

  5. 5.Bring sketch book to each class

  6. 6.Wear appropriate clothing (ie. steel toe boots*, jeans, long sleeve shirts), NO synthetic clothing. Cotton and denim only.

  7. 7.Purchase welding gloves. These can be found at Weldco / Praxair, Lowes, or Valley Gas Distributors.

  8. 8.All other tools and materials will be provided.


*Students are also encouraged to wear steel toed boots, but work boots will do.

Introduction to Blacksmithing & Steel Fabrication
Class 1
    Thursdays  -  Aug. 6th thru Aug. 12th
    6pm - 9pm - 10 classes  
Class 2
    Saturdays  -  Aug. 10th thru Aug. 14st
    11am - 2pm - 10 classes 

The first 6-7 weeks will cover blacksmithing techniques, cutting steel hot and cold (plasma cutter, chop saw), and a variety of patinas.  You will learn how to taper and scroll several different shapes of carbon steel, create steel leaves, letter openers, bowls and so on.  The final 3 - 4 weeks cover torch work (heating and cutting with Oxy/Acetelyne), MIG welding, cold bending.

The first 6-7 weeks will cover blacksmithing techniques using forging tools & equipment, use of plasma cutter, cold working techniques, different patinas, and the history of blacksmithing. The final 3-4 weeks will cover torch work, MIG welding, ARC welding, and the use of angle grinders and die grinders. Blacksmithing projects include, but are not limited to: tapering, scrolling, twisting, s-hook, hammer hook, italian leaf, veined leaf, bottle opener, and letter opener.

INTERMEDIATE BLACKSMITHING & STEEL FABRICATION

The intermediate class will build on the techniques learned in the Intro class with these new techniques: Decorative wall hook, pineapple twist, fire poker, bamboo, candle holder, file snake, hand fuller, eye punch, horse head bottle opener, dragon head, dinner triangle, door knocker, ladle, steel rose, campfire tripod, steel acorn, rams head, steel bowl . . . 
Prerequisite - Intro to Blacksmithing and Steel Fabrication.

For students who have taken at least two classes at Blue Hell Studio. This is a great way to get in some extra practice, get ahead on a project, or start something new. Chris will be on hand for technical assistance, but this will not be a class setting. You must bring your own steel. Price is $30 / hour, can be bought as blocks of time.
